Sandbags and Hydrosacks
Sandbags and Hydrosacks can be your first line of defence in the case of a flood.
These should be placed at every door, window and airbrick in your property to hold back flood water and protect your property.
As an alternative to sandbags, Hydrosacks are the state-of-the-art choice for flood protection. While Hydrosacks are more expensive than sandbags, they are easier to handle, especially when wet. Simply place a layer of Hydrosacks in front of your property and each sack will absorb up to 20 litres of water. The water then crystallises, so it will not come out again. Even if the Hydrosack is pierced, it will not let the water out.
Sandbags are the more traditional method of flood defence. They remain popular because they are cheap, easy to use and are an effective way to protect your property. All you need to do is build a wall of sandbags, with each layer overlapping the one below. Remember to stamp sandbags down to eliminate any gaps. You may also want to cover the wall with plastic sheeting for additional waterproofing.
